Mother Kept Her Word

http://www.scribd.com/doc/25881345/English-Uncle-Tom-s-Cabin-Poem
This is a piece inspired by the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was written in the 1800's and is about slavery in the United States. I really enjoyed this book and it is now one of my favorites. I wrote about the bond between a mother and son, both of whom are slaves, when all they had was each other. It really touched me, and i hope you enjoy it as well!

Life Poem

This is a poem that I had written about life. I was going through a time in my life when I had to choose between following the crowd, or finding my inner self. I believe that when you read this you might also start searching for your inner self. There rhyming couplets within this poem.

I was inspired to write this poem after reading Romeo and Juliet. I found it really interesting how the whole story relied on fate. It was fate that brought them together, and in the end; fate that led to their death. It's not very good, but i hope you like it! Address please(:

Blinks

This is TWO poems. I write, and then it's too short. I try to expand, but all that happens is the words get longer. The first was a freewrite. The second has no title yet. Suggestions welcome. I wrote that after talking to a friend about some arts school and then having a weird dream the next night about waking up from this life into another one and wondering if it's actually as much of a dream as sleep. I'm still confused.

A letter to Randy

I have recently read the non fiction book called The Last Lecture, By Randy Pausch. In this book, the man, Randy, is suffereing from a terminal illness. He is obviously not going to be able to continue his job as a professor, so he has to give what is called a Last Lecture. The day he is supposed to give the lecture, is the same as his wife, Jai's, birthday. For this piece, I chose to write a letter to Randy, assuming the position of Jai.

The zipping of tents and sleeping bags is what I wake up to. The fire crackles and the light filters through the tent making everything blue. I sit up and stretch. The scent of pancakes entices me out of the warm shelter of our tent and into the cool morning air. I see my dad at the fire pit making pancakes over the fire, my favorite sight in the world.

Texting, Oh Texting

http://www.scribd.com/doc/26005024/Texting-Oh-Texting

I wrote this piece because I think texting is taking over our ever day lives. I have to admit that I did get a new phone for Christmas, and I do text a lot. Who doesn't? In my poem I tend to refer to texting like it's King Kong taking over the world. I do this because it truly annoys me when you are trying to hold a conversation with someone, but you can't because they are trying to multi-task. From what I know, most people can't hold two conversations at once. I guess what I'm getting to is that we need to work on face-to-face communication and phone calls. That is how things get done. That is how we advance society. I'm pretty sure President Obama doesn't text what he plans to do to Congress.

This piece was inspired by the following free write based on The Last Lecture:
I wonder how the reader can write about this so easily. Why do you always hear about the brave people who face cancer and death with their chin held high? Surely there are people who wouldn't be strong enough, who wouldn't know how to deal with their sudden expiration date thats like the milk cartons at the store. Where is their story? Where is the story of the cancer patient who cant help but cry and mope? Is it that there aren't any? Or is it just that no one wants to hear it? Is it that cancer, although crippling, as an act of mercy bestows the strength to carry on, to bare it all on strong shoulders? I really don't know anything about cancer.

This is a piece that i wrote with the inspiration from two places. One was a short story I read, "The Scarlet Ibis." This story was a part of my inspiration because the main character's brother, Doodle was pushed to excel in a way that could be considered bullying. The other inspiration was real life around me. Everyday if you look around you see different things happening. I saw jerks, innocence, annoyance and people just being plain rude. I decided to make a scene to show the emotions of the bully, and the bullied with a great outcome in the end.

“Commodore Emulator”

My online Writer’s Portfolio Piece was a choice piece. It was inspired by my little brothers obsession of old computers − particularly the Commodore VIC−20, a BASIC computer used for programming step by step. In my piece, the “program” is already running. My piece is the transcript of how I think the supercomputer would respond to a scenario where war is forever, aka infinite. In order for it to do so, the supercomputer scans its database, which would be really a dictionary, and puts together whether or not it would be possible and why, (of course, a real supercomputer would have much more than six “intersecting definitions”, but that would go on for more than two pages). Finally, I would just like to add that this supercomputer must not be connected to historical events or be at all conscience, because common sense tells us that nothing can last forever, especially war.

This narrative poem was inspired by a rather frivolous free write with a silly joke. Nonetheless, the joke ended with a question mark. I commented on what a strange symbol the question mark was. If I Could Tell You the Truth

This is a piece I wrote about some one who really opened my eyes. They opened my eyes to what true friendship really is, and that maybe we never really were true friends. I wrote in one of my free-writes, "as they say, it takes two to tango, but now I am dancing alone with the ghost of what I thought was there, because she has given up." This was also inspired by this certain person, and even though I didn't put this in my piece, I feel this really summarizes some of the emotions I felt when writing this piece.

Romeo's Journal

My inspiration for this piece was the play Romeo and Juliet by Willam Shakespare. We read this play two months ago in class. This piece was inspired by the play becasue I basically wrote a summary of the whole play in Romeo's point of view. I made sure that what I put into the diary entries was truthful and that the facts evened up. My journal entries reflected how Romeo probably felt during the play while all those things were happening. The whole play didn't follow Romeo around. So, you didn't always know what he was thinking. So, I decided to make what I thought Romeo would be thinking during parts of the play.

I wrote this piece of writing because I feel that friends are very important in ones life, so I decided to write about the qualities a "good" friend would have. I wrote my piece of writing in the form of a poem, for peoms are more difficult for me to write than straight forward essays. Not only did i decide to pick an acrostic poem, but for every letter of my acrostic poem I created a haiku poem. I believe I grew as a writer not only because I feel my poem was well written, but because I used a more difficult genre that I think is harder to write.

Dear Winter

This is a poem I wrote during my writing class at Kent State this summer. One of our teachers was presenting a lesson about how to inspire poetry that uses imagery. We viewed a PowerPoint of images of winter while enjoying Peppermint Patties, and we selected words from a list of adjectives that are synonymous with cold. I tried to express my loathing of winter by choosing specific images and unique combinations of descriptive words. Enjoy! :) ~ Ms. Duffy

Welcome to the Writers' Forum!

There are two purposes of the Writers' Forum: to allow students to share their writing with one another to celebrate their creative abilities and acheivements and for students to gain meaningful and constructive feedback about their writing in order to revise and improve a piece of writing.

This is a place to celebrate writing! I hope you enjoy sharing your writing with one another as much as I have enjoyed reading your writing througout the first semester. You all have unique voices and bright, creative minds, and you are growing as writers each time you put pen to paper or hands to a keyboard. Please be respectful of your fellow writers and their work as you post comments on our forum.

As playwright Tom Stoppard said- "Words are sacred. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little."

~ Ms. Duffy
